My First Quilted Zipper Pouch And What I Learned Along the Way
For a long time I have wanted to sew a quilted pouch. I have seen many people make small quilted zipper pouches, and I thought to myself that I should try making one too.
A quilted zipper pouch is a perfect beginner sewing project. It’s small, practical, and something you can actually use every day. You can use it for makeup, small items in your bag, sewing supplies, or even give it as a handmade gift.
It also turned out to be the perfect project to work on in small pieces of time while the baby is sleeping.
In this blog post I’m sharing my first version of a quilted zipper pouch with cross quilting, along with a few things I learned along the way.
Choosing Fabric and Batting for a Quilted Pouch
For this quilted pouch I used some cotton fabric I already had in my fabric stash.
I chose a patterned cotton fabric for the outer layer, and added a layer of lightweight fusible interfacing behind it to give the pouch a bit more structure.
For the lining I used a solid cotton fabric, again something I already had at home. My goal for this project was simply to get started and experiment with the design.
After finishing the first pouch I realized it needed more padding and stability.
In my next test version I added batting between the layers before quilting, and that made a big difference. The pouch felt softer, more stable, and much nicer to hold.
If you are planning to sew a DIY quilted zipper pouch, I would definitely recommend using batting for the best result.
Cross Quilting – Why I Chose This Pattern
For the quilting pattern I decided to try cross quilting instead of straight lines.
I have previously quilted using straight lines, but I wanted to try something that would create more texture.
At first I quilted the fabric with 2 cm spacing between the lines, which created a very graphic pattern. A quilted pouch with cross quilting gives a beautiful texture, and the fabric really stands out once the pouch is finished.
However, I quickly realized that 2 cm spacing was a little too tight. It made the pouch quite stiff.
After experimenting, I decided that 5 cm spacing works much better. The pouch becomes softer and keeps a nicer shape.
How to Sew a Zipper in a Small Pouch
I am still practicing how to sew zippers neatly, and sometimes it can be a little tricky to make them look perfectly straight and smooth.Because of that, I sew the zipper very slowly and take the time to check that everything is aligned correctly before continuing. If something doesn’t look right, I simply take the seam apart and redo it.
One thing I noticed with my first pouch was that the zipper ends didn’t look very neat. They looked a bit unfinished. To fix that, I tried adding a small zipper tab to cover the seam. This small detail made the pouch look much more finished. It can definitely still be improved, but for a first attempt I was quite happy with the result.
Sewing a Quilted Pouch in Small Moments of Time
Because I am currently on maternity leave with my youngest child and also have a 2½-year-old, I don’t have a lot of uninterrupted sewing time. Instead I work on projects in small pieces whenever I have a moment.
A small sewing project like this pouch can easily take several days to finish, especially when you are experimenting and trying different solutions. Sometimes it feels like two steps forward and one step back.
But that is actually something I enjoy about sewing. When you take your time, you can slowly develop your own version of a design and adjust the details along the way.
What I Will Change in the Next Version
My first pouch worked quite well, but there are several things I want to improve.
First of all, the pouch needs more padding. In the next version I will definitely use batting to create more volume and stability.
I will also quilt the fabric with 5 cm spacing instead of 2 cm.
Another detail I want to add is a small side loop for a key ring. I experimented with this in some versions, and I really like the idea of adding a functional detail like that.
What Comes Next
I’m thinking about sewing a small series of quilted zipper pouches using the same basic design.
Not as a big collection, but more as a way to slowly refine the shape and details.
My plan is also to create:
-
a step-by-step sewing guide here on the blog
-
and a YouTube tutorial showing how to sew the pouch
Thank you for reading. 🤍
I share my sewing projects along the way, at my own pace.
